Filipino featherweight Bernabe Concepcion (23-5-1, 15 KOs) lost via split decision to Juan Carlos Martinez (19-12-1,7 KOs) over 8 rounds of what actually was a one- sided affair in the undercard of the Diego Magdaleno- Gilberto Sanchez Leon fight at ESPN's Friday Night Fights.
Bernabe Concepcion showed up slow, tentative and out of sync with his punches. His footwork was horrible and his feet leaden. Concepcion's defense was simply atrocious and he was horrendously off- balance. It was a disastrous and forgettable night for the Filipino fighter.
While Juan Carlos Martinez was a live, wily and determined pugilist who belied his records to earn a convincing win over a top- ten fighter, Bernabe Concepcion was a picture of a fighter who was just there to
pick up his paycheck and nothing more.
Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach tried his best to encourage his fighter in between rounds but to no avail as Bernabe Concepcion was just determined to coast along towards a lackluster outing. It was a shameful showing for a prospect who once a upon a time was touted to follow in the footsteps of Manny Pacquiao, the greatest fighter to ever come out of the Philippines.
